Piriformis Syndrome Symptoms and a Simple Treatment Plan
If you’re experiencing a literal pain the butt, you may be experiencing Piriformis Syndrome. This condition can make things as simple as walking incredibly difficult and painful. Here, I’ll be describing the common Piriformis Syndrome symptoms and what you can do to treat them.
Piriformis Syndrome is caused by a very small muscle in the pelvis that connects the hips to the legs. This tiny muscle helps to rotate your legs in their socket. However, the piriformis muscle also happens to be located right next to the largest nerve in the body–the sciatic nerve.
Now, normally, this is all good and fine. But sometimes the piriformis muscle may become too tight or spasm. When this happens, it can begin to crush the sciatic nerve and cause all kinds of Piriformis Syndrome symptoms.
Common Piriformis Syndrome Symptoms
The biggest symptom is pain. Lots of it. It can be anywhere from the hips, buttocks, lower back, or even the legs and feet. The pain may be sharp or dull, however, in extreme cases it can be nearly intolerable.
You might also experience Piriformis Syndrome symptoms like numbness or tingling as well, much like you would feel if your leg was asleep.
Something else you will probably experience is muscle weakness. Even if you don’t think you have muscle weakness, you can test this easily enough at home with the help of a friend or partner.
Simply lie on your side. Have your friend try to push down on one leg while you try to resist by pushing up in the opposite direction. If you notice that one leg seems weaker than the other side, there is a good chance you’ve got an over-exerted piriformis muscle.
What to Do If You’ve Got Piriformis Syndrome
If you’ve looked at the list of Piriformis Syndrome symptoms above and you recognize them in yourself, there are a few simple things you can do.
First, if you need to, take some painkillers for back pain. These aren’t a solution, but they can help you turn down the volume on the pain, so to speak, so you can a deal with it and get through the day.
Second, work on some stretching exercises for Pirifromis Syndrome. The piriformis is a small muscle that is difficult to stretch. But there are a few stretches out there that will target this muscle. Do these twice a day for a few weeks to help loosen this muscle and relieve the stress on the sciatic nerve.
Third, refrain from any sort of strenuous activity that may aggravate the muscle. These activities involve things such as running, bicycling, dancing, or intense sports. Make sure to give the muscle time it needs to heal and relax.
Piriformis Syndrome can be very painful and challenging to deal with, but you can recover from it. Keep clear from activities that might make the pain worse. Stick to your daily stretches to help relax and loosen the muscle and within a few weeks you will see noticeable improvement in the pain and muscle strength.
